How to Find Open Practice Days at Midwest MX Tracks

MWR Staff·

Race weekends get the attention, but it is practice days where real improvement happens. The problem with Midwest motocross practice schedules is that they are scattered — Facebook posts that go up on Thursday for a Saturday session, phone numbers that go to voicemail, websites that have not been updated since the previous season. This guide tells you how to actually find and plan around open practice days in Missouri, Kansas, and Iowa.

Why Practice Schedules Are Hard to Track

Most Midwest tracks are privately owned and run by one or two people. They do not have dedicated marketing staff or a social media manager. Practice sessions get posted when the owner has time, which is often the week of. Weather cancellations are common, especially in spring and fall when conditions change fast.

The upside is that smaller, privately run facilities often have lower gate fees and fewer riders on the track compared to larger venues. If you are willing to be flexible and check often, you can find excellent practice time at facilities that are not on many riders' radars.

Facebook Is Still the Primary Channel

For better or worse, Facebook remains the primary communication channel for Midwest practice tracks. Most facilities have a Facebook page where they post practice day announcements, weather cancellations, and track condition updates. Follow every track within driving distance and turn on notifications for those pages.

Track owners also frequently post in regional riding groups. Search Facebook for groups covering your state and nearby states — groups like "Missouri MX Riders" or "Kansas Motocross Community" often have members who post practice availability for local facilities that do not have their own pages.

The Phone Call Still Works

Many Midwest track operators prefer a phone call over a message. If a track's Facebook page has not posted recently and their website is outdated, call the number listed. Even if you get voicemail, leaving a message usually gets a callback. Most operators want riders to show up and will take a few minutes to confirm the schedule.

Our directory lists verified phone numbers for each track where available. Numbers are checked periodically but can change — if a number is disconnected, check the track's Facebook page for updated contact info.

Missouri: Where to Find Consistent Practice

In Missouri, the Kansas City metro area has the densest concentration of practice facilities. Challenge Trax in Kingsville and Grain Valley MX both run consistent schedules through the spring and summer months. If you are in central or southern Missouri, the options thin out, but there are several private facilities that open for semi-regular practice days — following the regional Facebook groups is the best way to stay current on those.

Most Missouri facilities run Saturday and sometimes Sunday practice during peak season (May through September). Weekday practice is rare and typically only available through private track rentals.

Kansas: Flatter Tracks, More Sand

Kansas tracks tend to have sandier soil than Missouri, which affects how the track rides and how it holds up through a day of practice. Sand tracks are faster and less technical than clay but can get rough quickly in hot weather. The upside is that Kansas tracks drain well — a track that would be muddy in Missouri can often be rideable in Kansas a day after rain.

The KC metro area tracks serve both Missouri and Kansas riders. For riders in central or western Kansas, the options are more limited and often involve longer drives. Connecting with the local riding community through Facebook groups is particularly important in those areas where word-of-mouth is the main way practice days get communicated.

Iowa: Strong Sanctioned Scene, Fewer Private Practice Facilities

Iowa has a solid organized racing scene — the Iowa MX series and various local promoters run a full schedule of sanctioned events. For open practice, the options are somewhat limited compared to Missouri or Kansas, but the facilities that do offer practice time are generally well-maintained.

Iowa riders often cross the border into Missouri or Illinois for practice days when local options are limited. The drive to a Missouri facility can be two to three hours from central Iowa, which is a commitment, but the practice time at quality facilities makes it worthwhile for serious riders.

Planning Your Practice Schedule for the Season

The most effective approach for finding consistent seat time across the season is to build a shortlist of three to five facilities within reasonable driving distance and follow all of them actively. When one cancels due to weather, you often have enough lead time to make it to a different facility the same weekend.

Investing in a trailer and a reliable tow vehicle opens up your options significantly. Riders who are limited to loading into a pickup bed or using a van are often constrained to closer facilities. A small enclosed trailer expands your range and lets you plan around the best available practice conditions rather than just the closest option.

This directory will continue adding practice day information as tracks verify their schedules. If you know a track that is not listed or has outdated information, use the Submit a Listing form to flag it — community updates are how this resource stays accurate.
