Motocross Race Day Checklist (2026): Everything to Pack for a Race Weekend
Race day runs smoother when you’re not scrambling for something you forgot at home. Whether it’s your first local race or your tenth, this checklist covers everything to pack for a Midwest motocross race weekend — the pit setup, the spares that save your day, hydration for those hot summer motos, and the small stuff people always forget. Print it, build your kit once, and keep it in the truck.
Rider gear (double-check before you leave)
Helmet, goggles (plus a spare lens and tear-offs), boots, gloves, pants, jersey, chest protector, knee guards, and a fresh pair of socks. Throw in a spare set of goggles — a single muddy moto can blind a $40 pair. New to gear? See our beginner gear guide.

Pit setup — your home base for the day
A pop-up canopy is the single best race-day purchase — shade for you, your bike, and your gear, plus a dry spot if it rains. Add folding chairs, a folding work table or tailgate mat, and a bike stand. A canopy weight kit keeps it from becoming a kite on a windy day.

Fuel, fluids & spares
Bring more fuel than you think you need in a proper race jug (and a funnel), pre-mix oil if you run a two-stroke, chain lube, and a quart of your engine oil. The spares that save a day: a spare tube, a clutch and brake lever, a spark plug, and a master link. A flat or a snapped lever shouldn’t end your weekend.

Tools & trackside repair
A compact tool kit, a torque wrench, tire irons and a pressure gauge, zip ties and safety wire, duct tape, and a cordless impact or air pump if you have one. Most trackside fixes are simple if you have the tools on hand.

Hydration, food & sun
Midwest summer motos are brutal — heat and humidity sneak up on riders and pit crew alike. Bring a cooler with ice, water and electrolyte drinks, easy snacks, sunscreen, and a hydration pack you can wear between motos. Heat exhaustion ends more race days than mechanical failures.
Cooler · Electrolyte drink mix · Hydration pack
Don’t-forget extras
Folding wagon or hand truck to haul gear from the parking area, a first-aid kit, a pop-up trash bag, paper towels and a spray cleaner, a phone power bank, cash for the gate and concessions, and your registration/membership info. A canopy-side wagon saves a dozen trips to the truck.

The night before
Wash and prep the bike, fresh air filter, check chain slack and tire pressure, top off fluids, charge your power bank, load the truck, and pre-mix fuel if you run a two-stroke. Doing it the night before means race morning is just coffee and driving — not a panic. Keep your bike dialed with our maintenance essentials guide, and find your next race on the MWR track directory.

Common questions
What should I pack for my first motocross race?
All your riding gear (plus spare goggles), a pop-up canopy and chairs, extra fuel and pre-mix, spare levers/tube/spark plug, a basic tool kit, plenty of water and electrolytes, sunscreen, a folding wagon, cash for the gate, and your registration info.
What spare parts should I bring to a race?
At minimum a spare tube, a clutch and brake lever, a spark plug, and a master link — the cheap parts whose failure would otherwise end your day. Add chain lube and your engine oil.
How do I stay cool at a summer motocross race?
Bring a cooler with ice, water and electrolyte drinks, a wearable hydration pack, shade from a canopy, and sunscreen. Heat exhaustion ends more race days than mechanical problems in Midwest summers.
