Youth Motocross Gear Guide (2026): What to Buy for a Kid Getting Into MX
Getting your kid into motocross is exciting — and the gear questions come fast. Youth riders aren’t just smaller adults: they crash more, grow fast, and need gear that fits now to actually protect them. This guide covers exactly what to buy for a young rider, how to size it, where it’s safe to save money, and what to re-buy as they grow.
Fit is the #1 safety rule
Oversized hand-me-down gear is dangerous — a helmet or chest protector that shifts on impact doesn’t protect. Buy youth-specific sizes for the helmet, boots, and chest protector at minimum, even though kids outgrow them. A properly fitted helmet should be snug with no wobble; boots should have no heel lift.
The youth essentials
Helmet — youth-specific, DOT certified, never used. Youth helmets are lighter for smaller necks. Youth MX helmets
Goggles — youth-sized to fit the smaller helmet eye port. Youth goggles
Boots — youth motocross boots protect growing ankles; don’t substitute work boots. Youth riding boots
Chest protector — essential for kids; the under-jersey style is comfortable. Youth chest protectors
Gloves, pants & jersey — youth combos are cheap and this is where used gear is fine. Youth gear combos
Where to save vs. spend
Buy the helmet new, always. Boots and chest protectors are worth buying new and well-fitted. Pants, jerseys, and gloves are fine used or budget — kids grow out of them in a season anyway. Knee guards are a smart add before they start jumping. Youth knee guards
Plan to re-buy as they grow
Expect to replace the helmet and boots every year or two as your child grows. Check fit at the start of every season — a helmet that fit last spring may not protect by fall. For a beginner-friendly place to ride, see our beginner tracks guide and track directory.

Common questions
What motocross gear does my kid need to start?
A youth-specific DOT helmet, goggles, motocross boots, and a chest protector are the must-haves, all sized to fit now. Add gloves, pants, and a jersey (used is fine), and knee guards before they start jumping.
Is it safe to buy used gear for a kid?
Never buy a used helmet. Boots and chest protectors are best bought new and fitted. Pants, jerseys, and gloves are fine used since kids grow out of them quickly.
How often will I need to replace my kid's gear?
Plan to replace the helmet and boots every year or two as they grow, and check the fit of everything at the start of each season.
